McNally Robinson Book Store - Book Launch
On Monday, October 19 (2009), Dawn White launched her book “Finding Your Voice: Our Journey with Cancer through the Health Care System” at the McNally Robinson Book Store in Grant Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba. There were over 90 people in attendance to celebrate her book launch.
Dawn’s message was that every one of us will become a patient at some point in our lives, and will have to navigate our way through the health care system. “I always wished there was a book we might have referred to, to guide and encourage us along our journey.” White was determined to turn their events and their journey into a positive experience that would empower anyone else facing similar life-altering events.
The value of this book lies in the fact that the “process” the Whites experienced and their lessons learned (53 in total), can be applied to moving successfully through the health care system no matter what the health issue or specific concern. Patients and their families have a critical role to play as advocates and partners in their own health care.
Dawn compared her book to a Global Positioning System (GPS) that can help the public navigate the health care system as engaged patients. White emphasized, “The book shows you how to be pro-active and to do your homework so you can experience some degree of success.”
The launch was followed by a reception and a book signing.
